Of the classic NES/SNES era "mainline 2D sprite side-scrolling Mario games", I think this might be the "least timeless"/most "you had to be there" to really love it as most seem to. Yet every time I've ever tried it, I just lose steam too easily. For as consistently praised as it is, I feel like I should be into this and am missing out. I wonder if I played through it all if my overall thoughts would change any. Someday I need to try and sit down and give this game a fully serious, dedicated effort I think. The children's picture/pop-up book kind of look just doesn't really grab me I guess. Maybe it's the combo of the things that most people have ever criticized the game for: Baby Mario is kind of annoying to literally babysit, going for 100% level completions seems like the operative goal which adds a kind of stress/obsession immediately as you say, Yoshi just doesn't feel as satisfying to control as Mario himself for me.Īnd I know people love the art style/direction, while historically being more critical of the more vanilla Super Mario World, but I've always enjoyed SMW's look and feel and much prefer it to YI. I always flame out from the game after getting into the second world or so, which I know is basically nothing into the game.Ībsolutely adore SMB, SMB3 and SMW but I just can't vibe with this game and it sucks! :/ I've tried to play this a few times throughout the years, but it's just never been able to keep my attention for whatever reason.
